CENTENARY CHESS PLAYERS MAKE THEIR MARK AT CHESS TOURNAMENT
Durban, 20 May 2026 – Two talented Grade 11 learners from Centenary Secondary School, Seluleko Thusini and Mika Bosongo, proudly represented the school at a chess tournament hosted by Sydenham SAPS in partnership with the Al Ansaar Foundation at the Siripat Grounds in Reservoir Hills.
The tournament brought together young chess enthusiasts from various schools across the region, providing learners with an opportunity to test their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in a competitive environment. Competitors participated in a challenging 20-minute rapid chess format, requiring quick decision-making and sharp concentration.
Centenary Secondary School commends Mika and Seluleko for their dedication and outstanding representation of the school. Their involvement in the tournament serves as an inspiration to fellow learners and highlights the value of participating in extracurricular activities that promote personal growth and academic development.

Centenary Secondary School Debaters Triumph as District Champions
Centenary Secondary School is celebrating a remarkable achievement after its dynamic debating team emerged victorious at the prestigious Umlazi District Debate Competition hosted by the Department of Basic Education of South Africa: Youth Development and Gender Equality.
The journey to success began on 25 March 2026 during the Durban Central circuit competition, where Centenary Secondary School claimed first place and secured a spot in the district finals. The team continued its winning streak at the final District Level competition held on 19 May 2026, proudly earning first place once again and cementing the school’s reputation for excellence.
The outstanding team comprised Nathan Sooful (Grade 11), Mika Emile (Grade 11), Grace Mwange (Grade 9), and Simanye Majola (Grade 11). Their confidence, teamwork, and exceptional public speaking skills impressed adjudicators throughout the competition. Nathan Sooful and Grace Mwange were additionally honoured with the prestigious Best Speaker awards for their outstanding performances. The team’s success was guided by their dedicated coach, Mr T Pillay, whose passion, encouragement, and commitment played an instrumental role in preparing the learners for victory.
Centenary Secondary School proudly congratulates the debating team and Mr Pillay on this phenomenal accomplishment and wishes them continued success in their future endeavours. The achievement reflects the school’s strong commitment to youth development and its dedication to providing learners with opportunities to discover, nurture, and excel in their unique talents.

Centenary Secondary School Rises Again With a 96.4% Matric Pass Rate
There was much excitement at Centenary Secondary School after the release of the 2025 matric results. Learners, parents and the staff of Centenary was ecstatic. The class of 2025 received 96 bachelor passes and 103 distinctions. The following subjects received a 100% pass rate: English, Dramatic Arts, Engineering and Graphic Design, Geography, History, Hospitality Studies, Information Technology, Mechanical Technology, Physical Science, Tourism and Life Orientation.
Nathaniel Venkatraman received 7A’s in English HL, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science and Accounting. He is provisionally been accepted at UKZN medical school. Yusrah Ismail received 6 A’s in English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Life Science, Physical Science and Information Technology. She received a B in Mathematics (79) %. Amirah Khan received 6 A’s in English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Life Science, Physical Science and Geography. She received a B in Mathematics. The principal Mr D. Gounden praised the grade 12 learners, parents, educators and support staff in working together to achieve a pass rate of 96.4%. Mr Jeewa, the SGB chairperson thanked educators, support staff and the smt for the passion, dedication and commitment in going the extra mile with free tuitions in the morning’s, afternoons, weekends, holidays and even on Sundays.
